Social Media Basics: A Three-Step Plan

Ask yourself questions about your social media aspirations. 

You know social networking fuels strong client relationships and spreads awareness of your brand, but if you have yet to develop your presence, you need to start right now—but not without a plan. Here are three ways to create a successful strategy and make the most of your time online:

1. Set goals

The first step is to determine what you want to get out of social media. What are the specific goals you're trying to achieve? How are your competitors using social marketing? Who is your audience and what are they looking for? Pondering these issues will help you set targets for unique monthly visitors and interaction rates.

2. Make schedules

Once you've pinpointed your ideal traffic numbers, it's time to determine what content will help you reach those goals. It's a good idea to make a monthly agenda to determine what you'll post and when. This eliminates the amount of time spent brainstorming posts and prevents content overloads and droughts. Don't forget to factor in time required to properly research and write posts, too.

3. Track results

If you're spending valuable time creating, planning and implementing a social media marketing campaign, you have to track results. If you don't, you're wasting resources on updates that may not be useful to anybody. Monitor sites like Google Analytics to determine if your social followers are clicking from your updates to your site and blog; if they aren't, it may be time to reach out to an online marketing consultant who can help you make a plan and improve your property's social media presence.
