We’ve all heard that happy employees are productive employees. Well, it turns out that’s more than just a nice idea: studies show it’s true. At G5, these findings come as no big surprise. Making our employees happy is a huge part of our culture, and we see the positive impacts every day. It even helped land us on Outside Magazine’s Best Places to Work 2015. Similar to companies such as Google and StumbleUpon, we’re known for doing lots of little things to keep our teams feeling fulfilled. For us, that means providing a dog-friendly workplace; free beverages; company games; a bright, open work space; and more. Of all of our perks, though, our team outings might just be the most fun. Here’s a quick rundown of why we love to go out and play as a team, along with the inside scoop on some of the cool things we’ve been up to lately.

1. Supporting Our Community and Strengthening Our Bonds

Just about everyone here at G5 has a few things in common: we love our bikes, we love the outdoors, and we love our community. So we were thrilled to don our gear and grab our bikes for this year’s Tour des Chutes—a cancer-benefit bike ride and walk/run. Team G5 had a blast, bringing people together from all departments and seniority levels. They pedaled, walked, and ran toward the same goal, showing that in addition to the important roles we all play at work, we have another crucial part to play as citizens of Bend. And nothing feels better than coming together to support a great cause with great friends in Central Oregon’s great outdoors.

2. Making a Positive Change (and Beating Stress While We’re at It)

Summer here means sunny days just about every day. So, naturally, summer is the perfect time for G5’s Commute Options Challenge. For the uninitiated, Commute Options is Bend’s game-changing nonprofit on a mission to reduce the environmental impacts of driving alone by promoting the benefits of alternative transportation. The Commute Options Challenge is a friendly, company-wide competition to see which G5 team can do the most to combat drive-alone trips to and from work. In addition to reducing downtown Bend’s traffic and overall carbon footprint, the challenge is a simple way to get some extra exercise for those who choose to walk, bike, skateboard…you get the idea. And it’s a triple-bonus, really. Everyone knows that exercise does wonders for stress relief, but we believe spending time with coworkers outside of the office builds morale—which is another wonderful way to beat work-related stress.

3. Enjoying Each Other’s Company—and Delicious Eats—in Our Awesome City

Yet another thing we look forward to about summertime in Bend is G5’s annual company picnic. It’s one of our favorite ways to get together in the city we love and unwind over good food, cold drinks, and bouncy houses. Not only is hanging in the sun one of the best ways to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the work week, it’s another good opportunity for some off-the-clock bonding. It’s also the perfect time to chat with people from other parts of the company we may not get to see in our day-to-day work life, which means new friends and, who knows, maybe even inspiration for new collaborations.

At G5, we value our talented, creative, and endlessly savvy workforce for who they are both inside and outside our office. Cooking up fun, engaging ways for everyone to play together is just one of our favorite ways to reward them for making us great by being themselves.
